In this video, I introduce you to the wiggle room grip. It’s not enough to tell someone to loosen up their grip. There has to be a kinesthetic way to get it done.
Here is what I’ve found to be effective to teach you how to really feel what looseness is all about with the grip. This makes you truly feel the weight of the racket head. There should always be a use of the racket head to create speed. I hope you enjoy the video! Good luck and stay loose!
Hello Gene, I really enjoyed your online video lessons. Thank you so much for sharing. You have introduced a very interesting concept by way of creating wiggle room when hitting a variety of tennis shot. I plan to try this out when I practice my volleys.
btw, should I try the same techique when volleying below the net, in no man’s land, as well as high volleys? please advise.
Thanks,
Tatchi
Hi Tatchi, sorry for the late reply. I’ve not been on my website for a while. How did it go with the wiggle room grip? It can be used on mostly everything. Hopefully, it worked out for you.
Hi Gene. It’s only been three weeks but I’m a fan already.
I notice your forefinger is apart from the other three on the grip. Is that by design or just a personal habit?
Hi David, sorry for the late reply. I really should check these comments more often. Thanks for the question. I believe it is a personal habit but I’ve explored doing it differently and holding with more of a full fist. I have found that the full fist makes me tighter and since I’m trying to be looser that didn’t seem right to me. Another reason the forefinger out is good is that it covers more surface area on the grip. I feel that it helps me control the racket better when I have that much of a hold on the racket. I’ve also recently realized that if you loosen your hand and just let it be, the fingers are always apart. It seems that naturally loosening up the fingers makes them get apart from each other. I’m all about finding what works at its basic fundamental and those are some reasons why I think the forefinger away are a good way to hold the racket. Good luck and stay loose!
Hi Gene, I learned to hold the racket handle with 1-2 of 10 and I needed long to discover that this is only the half way. The truth is that I have to hold the grip with 0,1 of 10 – that’s your wiggle grip! I appreciate your way to explain!

Thanks for the comment Christophe. I’m glad you found the video helpful. My goal is to share my thoughts and hope others can try them and make them work for them. An even bigger dream is for others to try my ideas and make improvements on them. It’s all about collaboration. Good luck and stay loose!
